A New Mystery

This is a picture of Nazca Lines in Australia (from http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread327853/pg23). No one knows how they were made. Some people might think they were made by aliens and some don't. I don't know who made them. Some people believe that the Nazca tribe from Peru came over and made them. These Nazca lines are usually in a spiral shape. They are very big and south of Alice Springs (23S, 133E).

There is also a picture of the facts we learned about Australia. We will continue to work on Australia for the rest of the week.

A Punctuation Lesson from Mab (Our Great and Powerful Intern) written by Noah and Sarah

This afternoon we took a lesson from Mab, Our Great and Powerful Intern. It was about punctuation in sentences. Then we did a one paragraph activity on the same thing. We had to fill in the blanks with punctuations, together on the board and then alone. It was awesome! Then we started writing this, and just so you know, we are the students.

Peru by Tory

Peru is in South America and has the largest lake in South America, Lake Titicaca. The capital of Peru is Lima. Peru is popular for their gold, copper, zinc, and textiles. Lake Titicaca has 41 islands.

Peru is where the great Incas lived. In 1533 Pizarro conquers the Incas.

Our Peruvian mystery was why the Incas built Machu Picchu, despite the fact that it is more than 70 miles from their capital, Cuzco. I think they built it to hide from other people during war. Other students thought they built it for religious reasons - to be closer to the gods.

A Literary Birthday

It sure is wacky today! Kids came adored in all kinds of outfits. We celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday by eating green eggs and plain ham with Keri's class. Then they did a dramatic reading of the book for us. We also watched "The Lorax" with Beth's class. We will be making signs to protect our garden from trampling feet.

March 23rd we will be heading to the Safari Park. Please pack a lunch for your child that day. We will have pizza day on Thursday. We need drivers for this event if you are able.

Multiplication by Ethan

For multiplication, we have been doing model drawing. We have also been using word problems. We have also been using multiplication to help us with other stuff. We played multiplication war, multiplication coin toss, multiplication go fish, and multiplication draw. We used counters to solve division problems with remainders.


In between all of the multiplication, we are helping Katie with the Cool Stuff Store. We take inventory and count products and money. We help find new products and make sure that each one is cheap enough for the store (that is a lot of division). We come up with marketing ideas, like posters and advertisements. We also talk about how to make change for different amounts.

Ancient Egypt -- Solving Some Mysteries and Finding it on the Map

Our historians have voted.
Was Hatshepsut a strong pharaoh or a weak one? Strong 11 Weak 0 - Sarah said she was a strong pharaoh but not well liked but the next ruler. She sent a trading fleet and she had many new buildings built.
Is there a curse on King Tut's tomb or was it mold? Curse 3 Mold 6 The mold found was Aspergillus flavus or Cephalosporium.

As geographers, we used longitude and latitude to find countries in Africa which led to a clue of countries that were formerly part of the Egyptian empire. We found different natural resources in the area like gold and copper. Upper and Lower Egypt are switched. (Upper Egypt is in the south.) There are three former capitals of Egypt - Giza, Thebes, and Alexandria.
